It depends...What have you done to correct your circumstances? You need to be honest about it. You will have to list all your creditors. You will then have a meeting with a DOD contractor. If they think you are a person of good character and you are trying to fix your credit situation you will be fine. If you have done nothing about it, up until this point look for a job without a clearance. Talk to your recruiter and they will advise you. *Pants*

define bad credit? just having a lot of bills will NOT necessarily mean you are denied a clearance. certain debts are looked on less favorably than others of course./. student loans, mortgages and medical bills are fine.. excessive credit card debt.. not so much. alos if anything is in arrears or gone to collections that can be a problem.

if you are up front and are still denied you have a better chance of having control over a repalcement rating. if you lie or omit.. you could face Fraudulent enlistment charges and be kicked out altogether. Mrsjvb

The reason is that if the Navy gives you a security clearance and there are still of a lot of unanswered questions about your credit, You would be consider a security risk, It is often said that you might sell secrets to another country for money. We had even filed bankruptcy but after a written explanation and visual proof that we were cleaning our credit up,everything was fine. Kat

You will be given a lower security clearance. Most likely you would receive a secret clearance, at worst you may not be given a clearance. There are many jobs in the Navy that do not require a clearance. dankohner1

It depends on what kind of security clearance you need for your particular job. If you need a top secret clearance, you will need to choose another job that requires a lower level. I doubt they would just toss you into a random job. I would assume that they would determine which jobs you are eligible for and present those to you to choose from. You will likely not be allowed to have a job that requires knowledge of any sensitive information that would be of interest to enemies of the US military.

If your credit is really poor, they will also probably require you to take financial management courses and possibly see a credit specialist who can work with you on your outstanding debts.

It's not the end of the world, but the military does want to see serious improvement, and you will not be able to get a high level of security clearance until they see that you can be responsible with your finances.

Work on cleaning up your credit. If you improve to your commander's satisfaction, you can always reapply for the job you wanted once your credit is in better shape. Art's Wife

The Army would put you in a job that security clearance was not needed.

We went through that entire process.

Unless you could get that credit cleared up... they will sit down and go through every issue they find on your credit report and give you an opportunity to explain.

Good luck to you! Armyvet35
